Skill Development Evaluation Essay
Before I started AS Media I had very little knowledge on
topics such as TV Drama and the Music Industry but I did have experience in the
coursework part of the subject. This was due to the work experience I did for a
graphic design company where I had the opportunity of using Photoshop which I used
to create a double page spread for a magazine. This meant that I felt a lot
more confident in the coursework part which has shown due to my grade A for my
online portfolio on Blogger. I worked hard for this and I spent a lot of time
on it. I also felt very confident in the TV Drama topic as I found that very
interesting to learn about, but due to me not feeling very confident in the
Music Industry topic I let myself down and didn’t do very well in the exam. But
the subject at AS has taught me a lot about media and has given me a starting
point for A2.
I feel like I developed over time within Media Studies and
this was proven when I compare my college magazine and music magazine together.
The first front cover I made of the college magazine shows how I had limited
knowledge when it came to using Photoshop. For example, the image I used of the
girl is very dull compared to the image I used for the music magazine, I have
shown how I can use the software to make images look brighter and more professional.
This also showed my knowledge in using a professional camera and photography
studio with appropriate lighting too. Also,
the fonts used in the college magazine are varied whereas the fonts used in the
music magazine are all the same, showing more professionalism and consistency. I
also added a lot more colour to the music magazine to make it look more
exciting and appealing to the audience. All of this proved how my skills
developed and improved especially in the software Photoshop. But not only did
my computer skills improve I also gained more understanding of the subject
itself. For example, my very first drafts of the music magazine had little
information on them and it was very bland whereas the final product showed lots
of information about artists, music and celebrity gossip making it again a lot more
exciting for the audience. This also meant that it was like an actual published
magazine because those points are what are used in them, showing that I took a
lot of inspiration from other existing and successful magazine front covers. This
shows how my knowledge developed when it came to using conventions from real
media texts.
My knowledge in terms of digital technology developed a lot
due to using Blogger as a place to post all of my work. Doing this meant that I
could ask people to view my work online and give me their opinion, this also
contributed a lot to my evaluation as I was able to gain a lot of audience/peer
feedback meaning my evaluation was very successful. Also, I was able to put a
poll on my blog so that my peers could help me make decisions for my magazine. For
example I used a poll to determine what the name of my music magazine would be.
Simply by using devices such as computers, mobile phones and cameras I was able
to improve my work massively due to the knowledge I already had and the
knowledge I later on gained. I used an Apple Mac mainly to produce all of my
work, but I used my mobile phone to access social media so I could see what
audiences find interesting. For example, I went on a lot of celebrity’s
twitters in the Pop genre to see what they were up to, how they distributed
their music and how they looked on magazine front covers. By doing this I was
able to get a real insight of what goes on in their lives. Therefore I took
inspiration for this so I had interesting things to include on my music
magazines front cover.
My creativity broadened a lot throughout the course, this is
very clear when looking at my college magazine compared to my music magazine. My
level of creativity enabled me to to create a colour, interesting and professional
looking music magazine front cover which people would enjoy looking at and reading.
Whereas the college magazine front cover I created was bland, had lack of
colour and lack of interesting things, meaning that my music magazine was more
successful. I am glad my creativity developed because it meant that I understood
more what a music magazine should look this and I was lucky to be able to
recreate the ideas of other successful publishers of existing magazines.
My research and planning for the course was vital as I had
to include every single step I made on the course visible on my blog. I tried
to include everything I could, from props and additional images to the processes
I made on Photoshop. My knowledge of this again developed later on in the
course but it meant that I realised what I had to do and I made sure that I included
everything.

What Makes a Good Music Video?
- A clear genre. For example, the connotations of a Rock music video stereotypically show dark lighting, dark colours, live footage of music and fans shown enjoying the music.
- Narrative gives the audience something to follow due to a story being told.
